Filipino Martial Arts Magazine -- Video Review
My good friend Kevin Watt, a Tabosa Kali instructor from Hawaii, gave me the video which I decided to review for FMAM readers. Having seen some videos on silat from various sources, I found this one by Bob Orlando, one of the better ones available. It presents material one can learn from, fairly easily, in an interesting format based on his personal observations and conclusions. Bob Orlando presents principles, concepts and drills, rather than merely a collection of techniques, and does it with a sense of humor and an engaging manner that quickly becomes evident. The drills shown in the latter part of the tape are a blend of Chinese kuntao and Indonesian silat but one can see a slight resemblance to the Filipino martial arts, as well as some styles of kung fu. After covering the principles of adhesion, whiplash, gyroscopic rotation, and shearing, Orlando goes into seating and leg maneuvers with sufficient repetition that beginners can readily perceive and understand. With some imagination and effort, such persons can devise their own tactics and techniques with these tapes as a foundation. We hope that Mr. Orlando follows up with one or two other tapes on more advanced material. |
